Synopsis[]
Travelling through hyperspace, Phoenix Squadron was on its way to Ibaar to help the people who were in distress. The Empire had doubled their work quotas and cut their rations. Unless the Rebels were able to get any food supplies to the Ibaarian people the weakest among them would starve. They soon arrived at Ibaar and discovered an Imperial blockade, led by Agent Kallus, was waiting for them. Agent Kallus threatened to destroy them unless they surrendered, but the Rebels proceeded with their mission and prepared for battle. A-Wing fighters were deployed and assumed attack formation. TIE Fighters were also deployed and moved in on Phoenix Squadron. Hera instructed Phoenix Leader to keep the TIEs occupied while the rest of them proceeded with the mission in getting their supplies to the surface. The TIEs were the first to open fire and the fight to get through the blockade began. The blockade opened fire as well and the transport ship carrying the supplies took a heavy beating. Hera instructed the crew to maintain course. Agent Kallus ordered all ships to focus fire on the transport, determined not to let the Rebels pass. The transport lost forward shields, and just when the Rebels thought they would get through the transport was destroyed. Defeated, the Rebels were forced retreat to hyperspace and returned to the fleet, losing Phoenix Leader in the process.
Upon returning, the Rebels were trying to figure out a new strategy to get the supplies through the Imperial blockade. Everyone agreed they had to complete this mission but also knew their fleet would not stand a chance against that blockade. Even with the entire fleet it still wouldn't be enough. Just then, Rex Stepped forward with an alternative. He told them about an engineer named Quarrie he had been in contact with, who had no love for the Empire and claimed to have built a prototype heavy assault Starfighter: A Blockade Buster he called it. However, Rex also said that Quarrie would only discuss his ship in person on the planet Shantipole, much to the shock of all the pilots. They all knew that Shantipole was a death trap and any ship that went there never came back. Kanan volunteered to send Hera but declined. She said she needed to remain with the fleet and lead the next run on the blockade, but Kanan insisted on her taking this assignment. He knew they could not beat that blockade with what they currently has and needed a better ship, one with better firepower and with the best pilot at the controls. After coming to a final agreement, the Ghost crew headed for Shantipole. Upon arriving, a reluctant Hera took the Phantom down to the surface with Zeb and Sabine, while Kanan, Ezra, and Chopper picked up the remaining supplies for the people of Ibaar. Upon entering the atmosphere, Hera brought up why it’s so hard to land on Shantipole. When flying in the upper atmosphere their ship would not be able to maintain power, resulting in disastrous consequences. Suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck them, damaging the Phantom’s systems. Falling fast they came out of the clouds and found themselves over a canyon of pinnacles. Hera struggled to navigate the crippled Phantom through the pillar forest and soon spotted a landing field where Quarrie was said to live. Damaged but all in one piece, they made it with a bumpy landing.
They nearly went off the edge of the platform but were saved by Quarrie, who has been expecting them. He greeted them warmly and gave his complements on Hera’s landing. Despite knowing how dangerous Shantipole is to ships, Quarrie said it was the perfect place to test them and was also the last place the Empire would look. Quarrie brought them to the main hanger and showed them his prototype Starfighter; the B-Wing. Despite judging its appearance, Quarrie assures them that his ship was one of his most advance designs. He said it was fast and mastered great firepower. Hera was delighted and looked forward to taking it out for a spin, but much to her disappointment Quarrie wouldn't let her, as he would only allow the right pilot to fly his ship. However, he did offer to help them fix the Phantom.
While making repairs, Hera asked Quarrie why he couldn't just transmit the plans for his ship to Rex rather than risk their lives to come to him. Quarrie said he wouldn't just hand over his ship to any pilot and then asked why she risked her own life to come to his planet. Hera began to tell him about her childhood. When the Clone War came to Ryloth, her mother hid her below ground but she would peek out to see the Republic ships fly over as they fought to liberate her world. She dreamt nothing more than to fly alongside with them. For freedom, Hera made difficult decisions when she chose to leave her family and learn how to fly. Then she chose to use her abilities to help others in need. Hera could not explain it clearly to Quarrie, all she could say was she needed to be up there. Even when there was explosions all around her and things were at their worst, she felt like she was at her best. Touched by her words, Quarrie allowed Hera to fly his ship. Meanwhile, Kanan, Ezra, and Chopper arrived at a transport ship and picked up the remaining supplies for the people of Ibaar. Kanan revealed to Ezra that unless Hera got back they were going to transport the supplies with the Ghost, much to Ezra’s concern as he knew the Empire would make them their primary target. Despite the dangers, Kanan knew the people of Ibaar were counting on them and he was not willing to let them down.
Back on Shantipole, Hera prepared the B-Wing for take-off. When Sabine and Zeb learn from Quarrie that this would be the B-Wing’s maiden flight and there were chances it may not fly, it was too late to warn Hera as she took off and went down after the engines suddenly cut out. But then she emerged and took to the sky. Hera flew the B-Wing through the canyon without any further problems. She took it for a climb and once high above the canyon of pinnacles she took a dive. Then after passing Sabine, Zeb, and Quarrie, she began testing the weaponry. Using a wrecked ship as a target, she fired the wing guns which didn’t cause much damage, despite being told it mastered great firepower. Quarrie instructed Hera to pull the leaver on her right which activated the B-Wing’s multi-cannon. She turned about and fired a huge blast of energy, destroying the wrecked ship in one shot. The B-Wing passed a successful test flight and Hera flew it back to the landing field. Just then, they received a transmission from Kanan. Hera told Kanan the good news and also heard from him that they were going to commence their second attack on the blockade. The people of Ibaar were becoming more desperate and were at their breaking point. Hera said they needed to move now but Sabine had some bad news. She revealed that even though it still had the power to fight, the energy drain from the multi-cannon’s firing system had killed the hyperdrive, leaving it unable to travel at lightspeed. Quarrie admitted there were a few problems with the ship that need seeing too, but Hera knew there was no time for that as the fleet needed them. When Quarrie revealed that he upgraded the Phantom with a new hyperdrive, Hera was delighted while everyone else was puzzled.
Meanwhile, the Rebel fleet arrived back at Ibaar and commenced their second attack on the blockade. The Imperials discovered the Ibaarian's supplies were aboard the Ghost and commenced attack. Through heavy fire, the Rebels noticed the cruisers were closing their path. They found themselves cut off, and Kanan was just about to swing around and make another pass when Hera, Zeb, Sabine, and Quarrie emerged from hyperspace with the B-Wing attached to the Phantom. The B-Wing detached and joined the fight. The Imperials detected the new vessel but Agent Kallus showed less concern about it. The Rebels allowed Hera and Sabine to fly ahead, and once in sight of a target they fired the B-Wing’s multi-cannon, instantly destroying one of the Imperial cruisers. Agent Kallus was left speechless as the Rebels successfully past through the blockade and dropped off their supplies for the people of Ibaar. With the mission completed, the Rebels departed from Ibaar, leaving Agent Kallus defeated once again.
Later on, Commander Sato expressed his compliments to Quarrie’s ship and told him that Senator Bail Organa was willing to manufacture more of his B-Wings in secret. Quarrie accepted as long as it was under his supervision. Hera thanked Quarrie for all his help in saving the people of Ibaar, but Quarrie pointed out that it was actually her victory since she was the one who flew his ship. Commander Sato complemented on Syndulla’s heroics and surprisingly promoted her to Phoenix Leader, under Jarrus’ recommendation.
