Vulture droids were a type of Droid Starfighter employed by the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars, designed to attack in swarms so as to overwhelm enemies. A number of Vulture droids were later acquired by a criminal who used the alias Nightswan and used to attack an Imperial Navy taskforce above Umbara. Then Lieutenant Thrawn, something of an expert on Clone Wars technology, recognized that these droids were at times being directly controlled from the surface, and deduced that Nightswan had rigged the attack in order to prompt the Empire to seize control of Umbara's mining industry.
