The Protectors were an ancient group of Mandalorian warriors, who once served the ruler of Mandalore as a sort of royal guard. After the Imperial occupation of their homeworld, however, the Protectors established a base on the third moon of Concord Dawn. The Protectors were also enemies of the Death Watch, and helped train the Clone Troopers during the Clone Wars. They were all-with the exception of their leader Fenn Rau-ambushed and wiped out by the Imperial Supercommandos led by Gar Saxon.

Clone Wars

During the Clone Wars, they fought with the Republic's Grand Army. At the third battle of Mygeeto, the Protectors fought in Skull Squadron against the Separatist forces. They also rescued Jedi General Depa Billaba and her Padawan, Caleb Dume.

Imperial Truce

At some point after the Imperial occupation of the Protectors homeworld Mandalore, the Protectors left Mandalore, and established a base on the third moon of the Concord Dawn system. Led by Fenn Rau, they forged an agreement with the Empire.

Conflict with Phoenix Squadron

In the third year before the Battle of Yavin, the Lothal rebels, Hera Syndulla and Sabine Wren, along with two Phoenix Squadron pilots were sent to Concord Dawn to negotiate the usage of their hyperspace routes. The negotiators were attacked by the Protectors in orbit, led by Rau. Lothal rebel leader Kanan Jarrus was sent to destroy their Fang fighters to stop further conflict. In truth, Kanan was attempting to finish Hera's mission, to negotiate terms. Sabine stowed away on board the Phantom, against Kanan's wishes to eliminate Rau for severely injuring Hera in a dogfight. After capturing their leader and destroying their Fang fighters, Rau was forced to let the rebels use their hyperspace routes.

Later, all Protectors except Fenn Rau are killed by Gar Saxon and his men. Fenn Rau rejoins the Rebellion and swears to avenge them. They are avenged when Sabine Wren defeats Gar Saxon and he is killed by Ursa Wren.

The Protectors used WESTAR-35 blaster pistols as means of weapons. The were equipped with air-breathers for piloting and sported lighter versions of Mandalorian armor. Their fighter of choice was the Fang Fighter, as some Protectors were ace pilots.
