"The Lost Commanders" is the third episode of the second season of Star Wars Rebels. It is the eighteenth episode of the series overall. It was screened in tandem with "Relics of the Old Republic" on October 8, 2015 at New York Comic Con, and released on October 14, 2015 on Disney XD.
Premise[]
Ahsoka Tano sends the Ghost crew to Seelos in search of an old friend -- one whose leadership and strategy skills could help the fledgling rebellion. But will this legendary commander be willing to join the fight?
Synopsis[]
Following the destruction of their command ship, the Rebels were now on the run from the Empire. While everyone was discussing their next move, Ezra suggested seeking shelter on a remote system, a place where they could hide from the Empire. Commander Sato and everyone else agreed that establishing a base would be a good idea, but Hera pointed out that none of the potential bases they know of had the tactical advantage they need to protect what’s left of their fleet. Ahsoka stepped forward and revealed to know a great military commander with a vast knowledge of the outer rim and could assist them in finding a base. When Commander Sato asked how they could recruit this military commander, Ahsoka had no clue because she lost contact with him a long time ago but had an idea on how to find him. Before heading out to the Seelos System to begin their search, Ahsoka gave the Ghost crew the head of an old Tactical Droid once used by the Separatists during the Clone Wars. She told them that these droids were good at finding things and believed it could help them find her friend. Then before leaving, she sternly instructed Kanan to trust her friend once they've found him. The Ghost detach from the fleet and made the jump to hyperspace for the Seelos System.

Upon arrival, the Ghost suddenly experienced some technical difficulties with the hyperdrive. Hera remained behind with Chopper to repair the ship while the others headed down to the planet's surface in the Phantom to begin their search for Ahsoka's friend. Sabine repaired the droid's head, and it begun to read "7-5-6-7" repeatedly, homing in on something. The crew spotted a walker in the distance and they flew towards it. As they approached, it turned out to be a modified AT-TE walker, used by the old Republic during the Clone Wars. The crew landed beside the walker, and after disembarking from the Phantom, they met three old men that emerged from the walker. Kanan recognized them as Clone Troopers and ignited his Lightsaber as Commander Wolffe took a shot at the Jedi until Rex immediately broke up the fight. Ezra introduced himself and his comrades to the clones and told them they were sent to look for them by Ahsoka, whose name Rex recognized.
Aboard the walker, Ezra tried to convince Rex to join their fight against the Empire, but Rex laughingly refused, stating that his life as a soldier was over. Kanan, who mistrust the clones, wanted to acquire intelligence regarding locations for the Rebel fleet to seek shelter and leave, but Rex convinced the crew to stay. As Wolffe voiced his objections to helping the Rebels, Gregor invited them to hunt for joopas as payment for intelligence. During their stay, Ezra was confused about Kanan's intransigence towards the clones, and tried to convince his master to trust them. However, Kanan still remained scarred by the events of Order 66, when the clone troopers, that the Jedi fought beside, suddenly turned on them. He and his Master were also attacked by the clones, and while Kanan escaped his Master was gunned down. Rex overheard the conversation and mentioned that not all the clones executed the order and told Kanan that Wolffe, Gregor and himself had their control chips removed. Meanwhile, an Imperial fleet led by Agent Kallus received a binary transmission about the Rebels. Knowing they must follow up on all leads in order to find the Rebellion, Kallus ordered a probe to be sent to the Seelos System.
Hunting for Joopas.
Soon the Rebels and clones began their hunt for a joopa with Zeb scouting ahead of the AT-TE, attached to an energy line. They soon came across a possible joopa that Sabine spotted in the distance and held position. As the sound of a joopa drew closer, Gregor laughingly revealed that Zeb was the bait. Too late to get Zeb to safety, he got tangled up in the joopa’s tongue and was eaten. The Rebels and the clones worked together to save Zeb, and they succeeded in bringing home a joopa. Zeb emerged from the beast’s mouth unharmed but covered in slobber. Kanan demanded that the crew collect the required information and leave, but Rex convinced them to stay for dinner.
Soon after, Kanan contacted Hera and admitted his mistrust of the clones. Hera understood his fears but reminded Kanan of a time when the clones and the Jedi fought side by side and saved millions of lives, including hers. After speaking with Hera, Kanan left the Phantom, but missed spotting the Probe Droid that was sent by the Empire. While gathering the required information they came for, Sabine discovered that one of the clones had contacted the Empire about their arrival. Everyone, except Kanan, were shocked by this revelation. Rex assured everyone that he had nothing to do with any communications with the Empire nor did he even know that Ahsoka had been trying to contact him for some time. He then confronted Wolffe who regretfully admitted to alerting the Empire in order to protect his comrades from persecution for helping the Jedi. Suddenly they spotted the probe droid, which attempted to escape, but was destroyed by Rex with a well-aimed blaster shot. As the crew investigate the wreckage of the probe droid, they pondered an imminent invasion by the Empire.

- As of this episode, Sabine's appearance is updated with new colors in her hair and armor, due to the scorch marks the latter sustained from the previous episode, which inspired her to repaint it.

- At the time of this episode, Agent Kallus has undergone some unspecific promotion, as his Season Two animation model sports a slightly different rank badge and collar.
- The Joopa fishing sequence is an extended homage to the 1977 movie Jaws.
- The undershirt that Gregor wears is adorned with the logo of the Power Sliders diner he worked at on Abafar during the Clone Wars.
- Rex, Wolffe, and Gregor all have faint scars on the sides of their heads where their control chips surgically removed.
- Indicative of the different design aesthetic of the show, the Tactical Droid head is the same model type frequently encountered during Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but appears much more streamlined and smooth in the series.
- The Joopa fishing harness is built out of a Clone Wars-era backpack, famously used by Ahsoka to carry Rotta the Hutt.
