Tatooine was a planet in the Outer Rim of the galaxy known for its desert climate and twin suns. It was the birthplace of Anakin Skywalker and the current residence of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker.
Some years before the Battle of Naboo, Anakin Skywalker was born on Tatooine as a slave; he was eventually freed by the Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, who recognized that the young boy was strong in The Force and came to suspect that Anakin might even be the prophesied Chosen One who would bring balance to the Force. As they were preparing to depart for Coruscant, however, they were attacked by Darth Maul on the orders of his master Darth Sidious. Fortunately, they were able to escape the Zabrak Sith Apprentice, and Anakin went on to become the Padawan of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Years later he would return to Tatooine in search of his mother, only to witness her death after cruel treatment at the hands of a tribe of Tusken Raiders; Anakin then slaughtered the tribe, the first of many acts of rage that would carry on after he became the Sith Lord Darth Vader.
After the culmination of the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan would take up residence on Tatooine in order to watch over Anakin's son Luke, while Luke's sister Leia was adopted by Bail Organa of Alderaan. Eventually, Ezra Bridger and Maul learned of Obi-Wan's residence on the planet, though Ezra was unaware of its name, after sharing a Force vision by uniting a pair of Holocrons and then linking their minds through the magick of the Nightsisters.
