Orson Krennic was the Director of Advanced Weapons Research for the Galactic Empire. He was in charge of the secret research project, codenamed "Stardust," which handled the shipment of massive Kyber Crystals for use in the Death Star's superlaser. Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin, Krennic's political rival, mentioned the project in comparison to Grand Admiral Thrawn's development of TIE Defenders. Tarkin kept his distance from the project, waiting to take responsibility for it only when it yielded major results.
