In time, a new hope will emerge. May the Force be with you, always.
―Obi-Wan Kenobi's final message to Jedi survivors[src]

Obi-Wan Kenobi was a Jedi Master who went into exile on Tatooine following the fall of the Galactic Republic.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Obi-Wan Kenobi was Padawan to Qui-Gon Jinn for a number of years prior to the Battle of Naboo, during which his master would be killed by Darth Maul, whom Obi-Wan bisected at the waist in their ensuing duel. During this time he met his future apprentice Anakin Skywalker, whom he served alongside during the Clone Wars. The two grew a brother-like bond over the years, with Obi-Wan also befriending Anakin's apprentice Ahsoka Tano.

The Siege of Mandalore[]

Ahsoka eventually left the Jedi Order, but later rejoined her friends after learning of the whereabouts of Maul, who had reemerged as an enemy of the Jedi and Sith alike during the Clone Wars. She hoped that Anakin and Obi-Wan would be able to join forces with her to face him down, but the pair were called away on an urgent mission; it would be the last time Ahsoka saw either of them before the end of the Clone Wars.

End of the Jedi Order[]

Towards the end of the Clone Wars, Skywalker was seduced by the Dark Side, becoming Darth Vader, the Sith apprentice of Darth Sidious. This led to a ferocious duel between former master and apprentice on Mustafar. Kenobi emerged victorious, severing Vader's left arm and both legs; Vader was then burned by a volcanic river to the point where he had to wear a life-support suit for the rest of his life.

After the fight between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader, Obi-Wan took Anakin's wife Padmé Amidala to Polis Massa, where she gave birth to two children, naming them Luke and Leia. Shortly before she died, Padmé told Obi-Wan that she believed that there were still good within the fallen Anakin.

Obi-Wan, Senator Bail Organa, and Jedi Master Yoda decided to separate Anakin's children in order to protect them from the Sith. Organa took Leia to Alderaan, while Obi-Wan took Luke to Owen and Beru Lars on Tatooine. At the same time Yoda wanted to teach Kenobi how to manifest his consciousness after death, with the help of his old master Qui-Gon Jinn.

Star Wars: Kanan[]

During his time in the Jedi Council, Kenobi helped training several younglings in the ways of the Jedi. During a session about the emergency Jedi beacon that called for all Jedi to return to Coruscant, Padawan Caleb Dume voiced the idea of the beacon also being used to warn surviving Jedi to stay away from the temple.

Exile[]

During the rise of the Galactic Empire, Kenobi, going by the name "Ben", went into hiding on Tatooine, watching over Luke.

Spark of Rebellion[]

Ezra had found a Holocron in Kanan's quarters that contained a recorded hologram message of Obi-Wan Kenobi, which was sent to warn survivors of Order 66 not to return to the Jedi Temple. The Holocron also warned that if they would come out of hiding, then they would be in great danger, but it also said that a new hope would emerge. Kanan allowed Ezra to take the Holocron and to test if Ezra was Force-sensitive.

The Siege of Lothal[]

He was mentioned by Darth Vader of how Ahsoka Tano can lead The Empire to other surviving Jedi, though Darth Sidious seemed unconvinced that he was indeed still alive.

Visions and Voices[]

Still struggling to find Kenobi's location, Maul recruited Ezra to go with him to Dathomir in order to find the key to destroy the Sith and switch memories. During the spell, Maul keeps yelling "Where is he?" while Ezra said he knows him and a planet with twin suns which is Tatooine. At the end, Ezra told Kanan and Sabine that the key to destroy the Sith was Obi-Wan Kenobi and they must find him before Maul does.

Twin Suns[]

When Maul failed to find Obi-Wan on his own, he used a fragment of the Sith Holocron to lure Ezra to Tatooine and then into the deserts, where he and C1-10P were eventually overcome by the harsh conditions. Obi-Wan found the pair and set up a campsite where he had the droid cleaned and recharged and helped Ezra. When the young Jedi awoke, Obi-Wan expressed knowledge of his identity and informed him that he was "in the wrong place"; Maul had deceived him and thus brought him somewhere he wasn't meant to be. Obi-Wan also denied that it was his role to get involved with the Rebellion or help bring down the Sith.

Maul soon appeared, and Obi-Wan refused to allow Ezra to get involved in their confrontation, instead instructing him to mount Obi-Wan's Dewback and head north. The two old adversaries soon faced off, with Obi-Wan igniting his lightsaber after his old foe guessed at Obi-Wan's purpose on Tatooine. When Maul lunged, Obi-Wan struck him a fatal blow, and then cradled his old enemy's body as the Zabrak lay dying, and answered in the affirmative when Maul questioned whether he were protecting the Chosen One. Obi-Wan then closed Maul's eyes after the former Sith expired, and after regaining his Dewback, he traveled to the Lars homestead, where he spotted his charge from afar.

Trivia[]

  • He is voiced by James Arnold Taylor in "Spark of Rebellion" and Star Wars Rebels: Recon Missions, who also voiced Kenobi in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
    • He is also voiced by Stephen Stanton in the Season 3 episode "Twin Suns". Whereas Taylor based his performance on Ewan McGregor in the prequels, Stanton's portrayal is based on that of Alec Guinness in the original trilogy.
  • In "Twin Suns", Ezra only ever addresses Obi-Wan as "Master Kenobi" and not by his first name. This is to maintain continuity with A New Hope, in which he says he has not heard the name Obi-Wan in "a long time".
  • The crew of Rebels have stated that Obi-Wan is at the top of Darth Vader's list of "people he would like to destroy" followed almost immediately by Ahsoka Tano and Yoda.
    • He's also at the top of Maul's list of "people he would like to destroy" as well, if not the only one on the list.
