Hera was born in the years before the Clone Wars, and when they broke out and Ryloth became occupied by the Separatists, her father, Cham Syndulla, led a resistance to liberate their people. During the many battles, Hera was inspired by starships and desired to become a pilot, and was inspired by her father's determination to fight for their people and their world.
At some point during the Clone Wars, young Hera acquired the cobbled-together astromech C1-10P.
At the conclusion of the Clone Wars, when the Republic was transformed into the tyrannical Galactic Empire, they refused to leave Ryloth and Cham found himself fighting a new enemy. Alas, his rebellion would cost him his wife, Hera's mother, at the hands of the Empire, driving him to want nothing more than the liberation of his world. This drove a wedge between Hera and her father, leading her to leave Ryloth to become a star-pilot, and eventually a member of the Rebellion against the Empire.
Dogfight with the Empire
After raiding an Imperial supply depot, the lives of the Ghost's crew were left in jeopardy, with four TIE Fighters circling the ship. After taking a hit, the ship's comms and shields were fried. Hera then sent Chopper to fix the shields. Moments later, the comms between Hera and Kanan were disabled. Hera then sent Chopper to fix the connection, leaving the shields still down, and to tell Kanan to shoot better.
When Chopper arrived below Kanan's turret, he was sent back to Hera to finish fix the shields, as well as to tell Hera to "fly better".
Back in the cockpit, Hera took Kanan's remark to heart, and proceeded to carry out some difficult maneuvers. After evading the fighters, Hera used the ship's nose turret to take out a TIE Fighter, reducing Kanan's targets by half. After finishing off the last Fighter, the three of them met in the ship's cockpit, where they praised each other's shooting.
Mission on Lothal and meeting Ezra
Hera showed up with the Ghost after her fellow Rebels stole Imperial crates from the Empire and picked up a passenger. Hera was impressed with what Kanan told her about Ezra and suspected that he maybe force-sensitive. With four TIE Fighters on their tail, Hera piloted the Ghost out into space and once clear made the jump to lightspeed.
Soon after losing the TIEs, the Rebels returned to Lothal and landed near Tarkintown where Hera and Kanan delivered a crate of blasters to criminal boss Cikatro Vizago, who gave them some Intel on an Imperial Transport carrying Wookiee Prisoners to an unknown slave labor camp. The Rebels arrived at the Imperial Transport Hera brought the Ghost alongside, telling the Imperials they had orders to transfer an additional Wookiee Prisoner. As Kanan, Zeb, Sabine and Chopper went aboard, Hera along with Ezra stayed with the ship where they spotted an incoming Star Destroyer. Hera told Ezra he needed to go and warn the others but didn't feel he could and insisted they make a run for it while they could. In the end he reluctantly went aboard the transport ship to warn them after Hera gave him some encouragement to risk his life for others.
Rescuing Ezra and the Battle on Kessel
Thanks to Ezra, the Rebels made it back to the ship and escaped. However when Zeb told the crew he had left Ezra behind, Hera said they should rescue him as she knew they were responsible for getting him involved. Zeb and Sabine were not keen on rescuing him, knowing the Empire would be waiting for them but Chopper voted with Hera and with Kanan's deciding vote they went back to rescue him.
Hera piloted the Ghost aboard the Star Destroyer undetected and the Rebels were able to find Ezra and escape to hyperspace with intel on where exactly the Wookiee prisoners were. She set course for Kessel and upon arriving opened fire on the Imperials giving her fellow Rebels a clear path. However they were ambushed by the Imperials and Hera had to retreat with TIE Fighters opening fire on her ship. Hera flew away in order to lose the TIEs and later returned to pick of the others.
After sending the Wookiees on their way, the Rebels returned Ezra to Lothal but later chose to join the crew after being given a choice to join their Rebellion and learn the ways of the Jedi.
Troubles with Ezra and Zeb
Subsequently, the crew took on another job for Vizago, which involved stealing a shipment of Imperial weapons from under the nose of Prime Minister Maketh Tua. It was soon discovered that the weapons were T-7 ion disruptor rifles, a realization that disturbed Zeb and caused him to become even more temperamental than usual. After Ezra came to Hera to complain, she gently told him that the T-7s had been used to massacre his people, the Lasats, on their homeworld of Lasan, which the Empire had conquered and occupied. The group soon met with Vizago only to be attacked by a force of Imperials under Kallus, who had been summoned by one of a pair of droids the crew had picked up after stealing the disruptors. Fortunately, Ezra was able to save Zeb after he engaged Kallus in a duel, and the crew received much needed money from the owner of the two droids.
Later, after they'd made a mess in the cargo hold of the Ghost, Hera decided to send Zeb and Ezra on an errand run in the town of Kothal. Among the items Hera requested was a meiloorun, a fruit not naturally found on Lothal. Because of its rarity, Hera hoped Ezra and Zeb would be gone longer, leaving her and Kanan some time to relax.
Some time later, Hera received a call from Zeb, who had stolen a TIE Fighter. Kanan then instructed them to hurry to the rendezvous point. When Ezra and Zeb failed to return in time, Hera began to worry. Thankfully, the two eventually returned. After hearing them out, the entire crew boarded the Ghost.
Later, after Ezra had begun training as a Jedi under Kanan, the Rebels observed a HoloNet News transmission that was preempted by Gall Trayvis, Senator-in-exile, who revealed the apparent survival of Jedi Master Luminara Unduli. The crew traveled to The Spire on Stygeon Prime, where all of them but Hera and Chopper infiltrated the prison. Employing the Phantom, Hera discovered to her chagrin that a jamming signal implemented by Sabine mimicked the mating call of the native Tibidee. However, she was able to employ this to her advantage to help cause a distraction that enabled her to rescue the crew, who were being pursued by The Grand Inquisitor.
Some time later, Ezra was placed within the Lothal Imperial Academy in order to learn the location of a shipment of Kyber Crystal, with Hera having greater confidence in Ezra's ability than Kanan did. The pair soon received the required info, and left to attack and destroy the shipment while Ezra remained undercover to help other students at the academy. They succeeded, and then returned to Lothal in time to help extract Ezra. Hera also took advantage of her rebellion contacts to help Jai Kell and his mother go into hiding.
Some time later, Hera was forced to deal with the problems of her other young charge, Sabine, who struggled with the secrecy Hera maintained regarding their primary contact, Fulcrum. Sabine, a former Imperial Academy cadet, was resistant to the idea of trusting in ignorance, and Hera's vague suggestions about a larger goal weren't enough to satisfy her. The two ended up stranded at Fort Anaxes after taking a damaged Phantom there to pick up supplies from Fulcrum, and were then forced to deal with a local group of Fyrnocks. Working together, they were able to survive long enough for help to arrive, and Sabine afterwards revealed that her trust in her friends-Hera in particular-had grown.
Empire Day and Ezra
The Rebels soon set their sights on a new target: the Empire Day festivities on Lothal, and the unveiling of the new TIE Advanced v1 prototype. However, they were forced to deal with increased security due not only to the event but due to an Imperial manhunt; as a result, Hera was unable to rendezvous with her team as planned after the attack. She later flew in to pick them up following their meeting with Tseebo, an old friend of Ezra's family who had downloaded vital Imperial information onto his cybernetic implants. Their resulting attempt to escape Lothal was complicated by Chopper being damaged, though Tseebo ended up being the one to enable their flight by providing coordinates to their hyperdrive.
It was also from Tseebo that the crew learned of a tracking device on their hull, though Kanan warned that the Inquisitor was after them was well and wouldn't be as easily diverted as the Empire. As such, he asked Hera to divert the Ghost so that it would pass by Fort Anaxes, while he and Ezra detached the Phantom-to which the tracker had been fixed-and headed for outpost. While the pair faced the Inquisitor and his forces with some unlikely aid-the Fyrnocks-Hera and the others met up with a ship sent by Fulcrum, whom Hera denied Zeb and Sabine the opportunity to meet. She then spoke with Tseebo, who revealed that he had learned the fate of Ezra's parents, and asked him to tell her so that she could pass it on.
However, Kanan prevented her from doing so upon their immediate return, due to Ezra touching the dark side during the battle with the Inquisitor. Shortly thereafter, he and Ezra went out alone to the Lothal Jedi Temple, where Ezra acquired his own Kyber Crystal. Hera and the others contributed various pieces of technology to him, which he used in the construction of a unique Lightsaber.
Unwanted Acquaintances and Problems
The crew of the Ghost later found themselves in an awkward position-and Hera in a temper-after Zeb lost a game of Sabacc to the smooth-talking Lando Calrissian in which he bet Chopper. Calrissian agreed to return Chopper in exchange for the crew helping him with a job, only for Hera to end up being given as "payment" to the gangster Azmorigan. However, Hera played off her natural beauty to lure Azmorigan into a false sense of security before taking him down and boarding an Escape Pod, which was then picked up by the Ghost. After paying Lando back for his trickery, the crew were forced to contend with a group of TIE Fighters, but managed to return to Lothal's home on Lothal only to be forced to deal with Azmorigan yet again.
After parting ways with Lando, the crew found themselves with the longed for opportunity to meet with Gall Trayvis, who came to Lothal supposedly to speak out against the Empire. On this occasion Hera joined the crew in the field, both she and Ezra having taken a shine to Trayvis' bold protests of the Empire's crimes. However, she became suspicious of Trayvis while they attempting to get him safely away from Kallus and other Imperial forces. After being handed a blaster, he revealed himself as an Imperial agent determined to see them apprehended, only to be taken down by Hera, who had disarmed the weapon. Afterwards, Hera did her best to console Ezra and assure him that there were other good people in the galaxy opposing the Empire.
The crew of the Ghost then embarked on their most daring mission yet: commandeering the Lothal Communication Tower in order to broadcast a message of hope to other anti-Imperials, after witnessing Trayvis "reaffirming" his allegiance to the empire on the news. Hera, as usual, was on pickup duty, rescuing all of the crew but Kanan using the Phantom after they were driven to the top of the tower. Kanan remained behind so as to enable the escape of the others, and they were left with no choice but to leave him when they were attacked by Imperial Patrol Transports.
Searching for Kanan Jarrus
When Kanan was captured by the Empire, Hera was ordered by Fulcrum to withdraw from their attempts to rescue him after reminding her that Kanan understood the risks and Ezra, the crew's remaining Jedi, was too important to risk losing. When Hera told the crew they could no longer continue their search for Kanan, her fellow Rebels refused to give up on him and hide. They disobeyed her orders and went to Vizago for some intel on how they could find Kanan. Despite being very disappointed with the three of them, she went ahead with Ezra's leadership and thanks to Chopper they were able to hack into the Empire's communications ship and discover where the Empire was keeping Kanan.
After stealing an Imperial Freighter, Hera and the Rebels journeyed to Mustafar, where the Imperials had Kanan. They deployed a TIE Fighter and landed it aboard Tarkin's Star Destroy which released and electromagnetic pulse, disabling the entire ship. With the ship down, Hera and the Rebels went aboard but when their only way to Kanan was sealed up, Hera, along with Zeb and Sabine went a separate way while Ezra took a short cut through the ventilation shafts. After hearing that Kanan was safe, Hera, Zeb and Sabine boarded their Rebel TIE Fighter and escaped with other Rebels, led by Ahsoka Tano.
A Larger Rebellion
Hera quickly adapted to being part of Phoenix Squadron, only to find Kanan resistant to the idea of acting as part of a greater rebellion due its similarities to his experiences in the Clone Wars. However, the Ghost crew later received an unexpected call from Lothal, coming from none other than Maketh Tua, who expressed a desire to defect and to provide the rebels with vital information. Hera and her crew soon returned to Lothal, only for Tua to be killed by an explosive during their rescue attempt; they were then framed for the attack, forcing them to find a way off Lothal. Having come on a civilian shuttle, the group decided to commandeer an Imperial shuttle and steal several Shield generators while they were at it. However, the seemingly unguarded landing platform turned into a strap, with several Stormtroopers appearing under the command of the Sith Apprentice Darth Vader, whom the Rebels barely managed to escape.
Desperate to escape, the Rebels reluctantly made a deal with Lando Calrission for help distracting the Empire in order to make their escape in exchange for some of their generators. They succeeded in reuniting with Phoenix Squadron, only for the group to come under attack from Vader's TIE Advanced x1, which decimated several fighters and crippled Phoenix Home. Hera and her crew, accompanied by Ahsoka, boarded the Ghost to engage him and managed to get his attention; when a Star Destroyer arrived, they were able to trick it into using its tractor beam on Vader's ship, and were thus able to make their getaway. Unable to return to Lothal at present, the Ghost crew found themselves a part of Phoenix Squadron, for better or worse.
New Allies and Enemies
The Rebels soon set their sights on finding a new base for their growing group, but found it difficult to locate a suitable site; it was then that Ahsoka suggested seeking out an old ally of hers, Clone Trooper Captain Rex. Hera piloted the Ghost to the Seelos System but remained in orbit with Chopper to fix the hyperdrive while the rest of the crew traveled to the surface to meet with Rex and his comrades. Once again Kanan was reluctant to accept the new situation, though Hera reminded him that the Jedi and Clones had fought side by side during the Clone War prior to Order 66. Unfortunately, the group soon had to deal with the arrival of an Imperial Star Destroyer, which sent a force of All Terrain Armored Transports down to the planet's surface while Hera put the Ghost in low power mode to avoid detection. However, the Rebels and Clones managed to defeat the Imperial forces, and Rex joined the group in reuniting with the rest of Phoenix Squadron.
Subsequently, Hera dispatched the crew-minus herself and Kanan-to a Republic Medical Station to salvage medical supplies needed by the Rebellion, while she remained behind and watched the continued antagonism between Rex and Kanan. She was then present when their friends returned with grim news of a pair of new Inquisitors: the Fifth Brother and Seventh Sister. Later, she attended a briefing in which Phoenix Squadron's commanding officer Jun Sato spoke of the need to procure generators for the inhabitants of the ice planet Rin, before ordering Ezra and Chopper to clean the Ghost. The pair subsequently departed in the Phantom, which returned with an unexpected pilot-Hondo Ohnaka-and a cargo of generators, which the pirate had obtained from Vizago only to be brought to the Ghost by the Phantom's autopilot.
Phoenix Squadron were subsequently called upon to try and break the Imperial blockade of the planet Ibaar, only to find the Imperial forces to be too much for the ships they currently possessed. After learning of a new ship designed for just such a task from Rex, Hera took Sabine, Zeb, and Chopper to Shantipole, where they met the eccentric Mon Calamari engineer Quarrie. The cantankerous builder was initially reluctant to let his design be used for war, but after hearing Hera talk about her own love of flight, he agreed to let her test his B-Wing Starfighter. Hera found the ship to be just what the Rebels were looking for, and soon flew it against the Ibaar blockade after docking it with a now Hyperdrive-equipped Phantom. After Quarrie departed to oversee the continued production of his design, Hera received unexpected news from Commander Sato: at Kanan's suggestion, she would now serve as Phoenix Leader.
In her expanded leadership role, Hera coordinated several missions from the Rebels' stopover point on Garel, including sending Ezra, Sabine, and Chopper to meet a GNK Power Droid carrying vital intelligence. After they successfully completed the mission-though not without a number of hiccups-Hera greeted them and their unlikely new ally Ketsu Onyo, an old acquaintance of Sabine's. It would later fall to her to order a rescue mission to retrieve Commander Sato, Ezra, and the crew of Sato's Alderaan Cruiser after they were captured by an Imperial Interdictor. Much to Kanan's dismay, she assigned him to work with Rex, feeling that the veteran's knowledge of Imperial protocol would be invaluable; the previously antagonistic duo ended up bonding through the experience.
A Mystery Solved and An Unlikely Alliance
Some time later, Ezra experienced a vision through The Force of his parents, prompting Hera to finally reveal what Tseebo had told her: that Ezra's parents had been taken to an Imperial prison. She and Kanan had spent many resources trying to find the Bridgers but proved unsuccessful, but found new hope in news of a prison break. Ezra was able to use a Jedi exercise to identify an anonymous escapee to Lothal as a possible source of information, and departed with Kanan to investigate. Sadly, he soon learned from the man-one Ryder Azadi-that his parents had been killed during the breakout. Hera soon spoke with Kanan regarding the matter, as well as informing him of a trio of Hammerhead Corvettes being supplied to Phoenix Squadron by Senator Organa, which she and her crewmates soon succeeded in securing with help from Ryder and Leia Organa.
Due to increased Imperial attacks on their transit, the Rebellion sought to take advantage of the system of Concord Dawn as a new route through which to move their ships. However, The Protectors, Mandalorians who held the system, attacked the fighter squadron Hera led there to approach them, and Hera's ship was badly damaged and she badly injured as a result. As she lay unconscious, Kanan and Sabine made another effort to enlist the Protectors in their cause; failing that, Sabine disabled many of their ships, though she refrained from killing their leader Fenn Rau, whom they instead took prisoner. Sabine then greeted Hera after she awoke, and when Hera and Kanan expressed their approval of her choice, she replied that she had "been raised right."
The crew of the Ghost soon learned of a group of refugees menaced by the Empire from the distasteful source of Hondo, who had kept in touch with Ezra, and then learned that the two fugitives were a pair of Lasat. They were further surprised when Chava and Gron, the pair in question, identified Zeb as the former leader of the Lasan High Honor Guard, something he had never revealed to his crewmates. Following a Lasat legend that purported to lead to Lira San, they encountered a stellar maelstrom and were then confronted by a group of Imperial ships. However, by employing his AB-75 Bo-Rifle in the fashion it had been employed by the ancient Lasat, Zeb was able to navigate the Ghost through the maelstrom to Lira San, which proved to be the original home of his people. As a bonus, their visit made the system a charted location that they could return to with greater ease in the future, as well as passing word of its location to any other Lasat they encountered in the future.
Desperately in need of fuel, the Rebels set out to raid a Mining Guild refinery supplying fuel to the Empire, only to run into a pod of Purrgil. Hera was less than enthusiastic about the development, knowing of ship accidents involving the creatures that had cost friends of hers their live, but was forced to go along with Ezra's unexpected bonding with them. The creatures then proved to be an unexpected help during the raid, and the Rebels were stunned when they learned the truth: the Purrgil possessed a biological equivalent to Hyperdrive, allowing them to travel at lightspeed.
Still in search of a new base, the Rebels set their sights on an Imperial Light Carrier being used to stage bombing runs against Hera's home planet of Ryloth. Having received word of it from a local Rebel cell, Hera was forced to do something she had long been avoiding: speaking to her estranged father Cham and requesting his assistance in the operation. Using the Free Ryloth Movement's Nu-class Transport, the Ghost crew joined forces with Cham and his subordinates Gobi Glie and Numa. To Hera's frustration, her father was intent on destroying the carrier to send a message of hope to their people, while she was intent on stealing it to aid the larger Rebellion. In a resulting confrontation, Hera slipped back into her childhood accent as she pleaded with her father to look beyond his fight for their world alone, but her words fell on deaf ears.
The two crews soon managed to board the carrier, at which point Cham pulled a doublecross, stunning Hera's crewmates and restraining her. However, she managed to reactivate Chopper-whom Cham had been surprised to see still in her company-and he freed the group, who managed to halt the other Twi'lek's efforts to destroy the carrier. The heat of the moment and the threat of the Imperial forces soon persuaded father and daughter to work together, and they succeeded in seizing the carrier and destroying an Imperial Light Cruiser, thus fulfilling both objectives. Cham then admitted how proud he was of his daughter, and that she had been correct in believing that they needed to fight for more than just Ryloth.
Victory and Defeat
The Ghost crew then traveled to Geonosis to investigate an Imperial construction project, and were stunned to find the once populous planet apparently deserted. The crew then boarded a construction module to investigate the situation, only to be attacked by Imperial forces under Agent Kallus. Zeb was lost in the resulting conflict, but the Rebels eventually managed to locate him on one of Geonosis' moons, where he had been stranded with Kallus. Subsequently, the crew raided Horizon Base in order to secure fuel for the fleet's transition to a new base in the Yost System, only for Chopper to go off on his own without permission. However, his disobedience proved an unexpected boon, as his new ally AP-5 was able to inform the Rebels of a trap laid in the Yost System and direct them to a more secure location: Atollon.
As the Rebels set up their new home of Chopper Base, Hera reluctantly came to accept the fact of Ezra and Kanan's coming departure with Ahsoka for the planet Malachor, which they had been advised to seek out by Jedi Master Yoda after a visit to the Lothal Jedi Temple. When a pilot named Dicer disappeared on the Atollon Coral Mesa, Hera and her crewmates investigated only to be attacked by Krykna Spiders, who abducted Rex. During the resulting search, Hera insisted on Kanan and Ezra searching apart from the others, feeling that the group needed to learn to work without the two Jedi to aid them. Following Rex's rescue, Hera and Kanan bid each other farewell, with Kanan doing his best to alleviate her fears. Sadly, Hera would later witness the pair returning without Ahsoka, Kanan having been blinded in an encounter with their latest enemy: Maul.
Trouble with Force Users
Several months passed following the mission to Malachor, during which Ezra took a more active leadership role and became dangerously aggressive in his use of the Force, as seen during a mission he led to rescue Hondo from an Imperial prison. Hondo then informed the group of the existence of several Clone Wars Y-Wing Starfighters at the Imperial Reklam Station, which they decided to attempt to claim. After Ezra was named lieutenant commander for the mission, Hera approached Kanan, who had become increasingly distant, and expressed her fears regarding Ezra's blame of himself for the tragedy of Malachor. She would later go to the aid of the force sent to Reklam with the unexpected company of a reinvigorated Kanan, who had met with a mysterious Force user known as The Bendu. After learning of Ezra's reckless behavior on the mission-which cost the group the Phantom-Hera suspended his recent promotion, though she commended Zeb for standing up for him.
Unfortunately, Hera and her friends would soon be forced to deal directly with the menace of Maul, who commandeered the Ghost and took its crew-minus the absent Ezra and Kanan-hostage in a bid to force the two Jedi to surrender the Sith Holocron they had recovered on Malachor and the Jedi Holocron in Kanan's possession. Forced to show Maul around the ship, Hera inadvertently led him to Kanan's Holocron, as Maul was able to probe her mind and learn it's location and Ezra's history with it, as well as Kanan's real name. She and the others soon attempted to break free and reclaim the ship after taking out Maul's weaponized Tour Guide Droids, but were quickly subdued by the Zabrak. After the two Jedi arrived at Vizsla Keep 09, Maul ordered more of his droids to execute the Rebels, but Kanan was able to rescue them after Maul's latest failed attempt on his life. He then intervened while Maul and Ezra were sharing a vision brought about by the united Holocrons, and Hera and her friends were able to recover Ezra while Maul escaped aboard his vessel Nightbrother.
The Grand Admiral
Following a mission in which Sabine was planted at Skystrike Academy to rescue would be defectors from the Imperial flight corps, Hera would return to Ryloth with her crew to aid her father. After saving him and Numa from attacking Scout Troopers, they learned of his recent difficulties with the unexpected performance of the local Imperial officer, Captain Slavin. Upon learning that her ancestral home in Tann Province had been occupied as the Imperial headquarters and that her family Kalikori-treasured by her late mother-had not been recovered, Hera became determined to rescue the artifact. While their teammates distracted Slavin's forces, Hera and Ezra infiltrated her home with Chopper, and managed to locate the Kalikori.
Unfortunately, the true source behind the Imperials' unexpected recent victories on Ryloth soon revealed himself: Grand Admiral Thrawn, who quickly recognized Hera for who she was after she attempted to pass herself off as a peasant and thief. The two were then held hostage in a bid to force Cham to surrender himself, but Hera employed Chopper to provide a distraction during the prisoner exchange by detonating numerous explosives, badly damaging her family home. However, following their escape-which Thrawn allowed-Hera expressed a new understanding of family, holding the people she cared about, living and dead, closer than her home or family heirlooms. Subsequently, she and Sabine dropped Rex and the rest of their crew off on Agamar while they completed another mission. Though the boys and Chopper failed to secure the Proton Bombs they had been sent to salvage, they did surprise Hera and Sabine with a Sheathipede-class Shuttle, which Kanan presented as the Phantom II.
Concord Dawn, Mykapo, and Wynkahthu
Hera later authorized Sabine and Ezra to join their prisoner Fenn Rau back to Concord Dawn to investigate a loss of contact with his comrades, only to learn that they had fallen to Gar Saxons Imperial Super Commandos. However, the incident prompted Rau to join the Rebellion, having come to respect the Rebels due to Sabine's dedication. Some time later, the Ghost was dispatched to rescue Rebel sympathizers from Mykapo, only to find an unlikely band of Rebels: the Iron Squadron, a trio of youngsters and a droid led by Commander Sato's nephew Mart Mattin. Hera and her comrades made every effort to convince the young hotheads to flee with them, but Mart refused to abandon his home system despite the mounting odds against him. Unfortunately, he ended up alone aboard his adrift ship, the Sato's Hammer, after a failed attempt to take on Admiral Kassius Konstantine's forces by himself.
Commander Sato was soon briefed on the situation and expressed the desire to go to Mart's aid, but Hera volunteered to take her crew into the fray instead on his behalf. They managed to dock with the disabled ship in order to tow it to safety, and then received unexpected aid as Commander Sato arrived as promised. The group managed to flee shortly after the Chimaera, Grand Admiral Thrawn's flagship, arrived, and then bore witness to the happy reunion between uncle and nephew. Hera and her crew soon found themselves dealing with Hondo Ohnaka and another unwelcome face from the past, Azmorigan, who informed them of an Imperial Cargo Ship carrying Proton Bombs in a decaying orbit of Wynkahthu. Not trusting the criminals, Hera put Zeb in charge of the salvage crew consisting of Ezra, the two "partners," and himself; the mission proved to be a success for the Rebels, and as Hera hoped Ezra came to a greater understanding of Hondo's duplicity.
Lothal and Geonosis
Having learned of a new Imperial project on Lothal, Kanan and Ezra infiltrated the Lothal Imperial Factory with the aid of the Lothal Rebels, only to find Thrawn overseeing the facility. The pair would receive aid from a most unlikely source: Agent Kallus, who revealed himself as the new Fulcrum, being one of several agents to use the codename originated by Ahsoka. After hearing of the incident, Zeb spoke of his partnership with the Imperial Security Bureau agent on Bahryn; while he seemed to believe this had marked the beginning of Kallus' conversion to the Rebellion, Hera remained cautious. She later departed on a mission to scout Lothal for their upcoming attack on the facility, a joint effort between multiple cells to halt production of the deadly new TIE Defender. Just prior to this, Ezra began experiencing disturbing visions of Maul, and despite her misgivings Hera left the matter to Kanan.
Shortly thereafter, Hera and her crewmates would return to Geonosis, acting on orders from Bail Organa to search for a missing Rebel team that had been sent to Geonosis to further investigate the Ghost Crew's previous findings. Joined by Rex, the mission would see the group joining forces with his old comrade Saw Gerrera, whose team had discovered an energy source on Geonosis' surface. After setting down on the planet's surface during a storm, Hera divided the group into two teams, with Zeb and Sabine remaining with her aboard the Ghost while the others set off in search of Gerrera and his team; they soon succeeded in locating Gerrera, though his team had been eliminated. Hera soon sent Zeb and Sabine to investigate the energy reading, which proved to be a Shield generator; she then tasked the two with salvaging its Deflector Core. Hera was then contacted by the search team with news of functional B1 Battle Droids and Droidekas on the planet, and she alerted Zeb and Sabine only to find that they had wandered into a nest of the destroyer droids.
Hera then instructed the search team to return to the ship, only to learn that they had come across a Geonosian who activated the Droidekas; Hera promptly agreed with Gerrera's suggestion that they pursue him in order to deactivate the droids, and also advised Zeb and Sabine to employ the Deflector Core for their own defense. The rebels were soon forced to deal with another problem: an Imperial Light Cruiser, the appearance of which prompted Hera to send Zeb into the tunnels in search of their missing comrades. In a trademark display of ingenuity, Hera piloted the Ghost into a large shaft that descended into the depths of the planet after taking out a pair of TIE Bombers. She was then introduced to both Gerrera-whose reputation as a radical had reached her prior to their mission and prompted her to take Kanan aside-and Klik-Klak, a lone Geonosian whom Gerrera attempted to take as his own prisoner. Fortunately, Gerrera was soon convinced of the error of his ways, and the rebels were able to depart Geonosis after finding canisters that had been used to deploy insecticide against its inhabitants, though they were unable to bring any back for presentation to the Imperial Senate.
Hera later took most of the crew on a mission, leaving Zeb-as security chief-behind at Chopper Base with Chopper and AP-5 for company. They were soon called back to base by Zeb, just in time to receive a transmission from Agent Kallus of the success of a stratagem Zeb had employed using an Imperial Infiltrator Droid. Subsequently, when it was revealed that Sabine had acquired the Darksaber, Hera pleaded with her to take it up in hopes of recruiting other Mandalorians to the Rebellion, particularly for the upcoming assault on Lothal. Kanan later contacted her to report the difficulties he was having training Sabine in its use, and Hera soon realized that Kanan wasn't giving Sabine a chance to truly embrace the role. She thus encouraged him to let Sabine actually wield the Darksaber as a sign of trust, something that the young Mandalorian had been slow to display when she had first met Kanan and Hera.
Following Sabine's departure from the crew to rejoin her people, Hera and the others-minus Kanan-were assigned a mission to meet up with the Chandrila Mistress, though they were not provided many details regarding their contact. After a narrow miss with a Tactical Infiltration Pod, the group began refueling the ship's Gold Squadron fighter escort, only to be attacked by Imperial ships that forced the crew aboard the Ghost. To Hera's surprise, they were joined by Senator Mon Mothma, whom she and the others had recently watched denouncing Palpatine on the HoloNet; the two would share a private moment during their subsequent attempts to escape Imperial forces, in which they compared their experiences and expressed their admiration for each other. Hera's quick thinking allowed Gold Leader and Ezra to disable the Star Destroyers that intercepted the Ghost on the other side of the Archeon Nebula, through which Thrawn had predicted she would try to escape. They then arrived at Dantooine and watched as the Rebel Fleet emerged from hyperspace in response to Mon Mothma's call to arms.
Hera would later send Wedge Antilles on a mission with Chopper and AP-5 to recover Imperial codes, and unlike Zeb and Ezra expressed confidence in the trio's ability to succeed. After AP-5 voiced concerns about Chopper's behavior following their return, Hera was the first to believe him after noticing Chopper's unusual activities herself. The crew were nearly jettisoned into space by Chopper, who was manipulated by the Controller, but managed to regain control of the ship and prevent Chopper from transmitting the location of Chopper Base. Angered by the Imperials' actions-particularly their manipulation of her droid companion-Hera took advantage of their connection to send a power surge through Chopper that ended up destroying the Controller's ship. Much to her relief, Chopper recovered from the experience, and the crew had no problems recovering AP-5 from drifting in space.
Maul and Thrawn
While preparing for the assault on Lothal, Hera and the others were troubled when Ezra reported another Force vision involving Maul, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Tatooine. Though Hera understood Ezra's desire to stop Maul, she felt that there was nothing to be feared, as Senator Organa had reported the Jedi Master's demise. She then stressed how important Ezra was to their mission given his familiarity with Lothal; despite this, Ezra subsequently departed without her leave. He later returned with the Nightbrother and apologized for leaving, before affirming that he had come back to his family and suggested that it was time for them to "go home."
Hera and her friend soon welcomed Massassi Group to Atollon, only to receive a warning from Fulcrum about Thrawn; this was quickly followed by the arrival of the Seventh Fleet. With long-range communications jammed and Interdictor Cruisers keeping the fleet from jumping to hyperspace, Hera ordered Kanan and Ezra to go for reinforcements. Kanan opted to travel into the wilderness to contact a friend, leaving Ezra and Chopper to carry out the mission using the Gauntlet Fighter. With Rex and Zeb serving as her crew, Hera took the Ghost into battle alongside Phoenix and Green Squadrons to try and protect their ships. However, after the loss of Phoenix Nest, Hera led the force back to the planet's surface.
A Shield generator rigged up by Sabine enabled Chopper Base to survive an orbital bombardment, and Hera was relieved when Kanan proved to be alive despite being caught outside the shield. However, the relief was short-lived, as Thrawn soon led a ground assault that saw the Rebels surrounded and captured by his Death Troopers. Fortunately, Kanan's "friend" chose that moment to intervene, unleashing a Force-generated storm intended to drive both battling forces off the planet. Ezra had also returned with forces from Clan Wren, who took out the lone surviving Interdictor and enabled the remnants of the fleet to escape. Ursa Wren expressed her sympathies for the rebel losses as well as hope that the rebels might aid her people in return, but Hera was adamant that she first had to get the survivors of Atollon to Yavin IV.
Personality and Traits
Hera's personality was somewhat two-sided; while she exuded a no-nonsense style of command, she was also known for being a very warm and compassionate individual. As a highly capable pilot and captain, Hera took good care of her ship, as well as her crew. Upon meeting Ezra, Hera developed a sort of motherly bond with the boy as she had with the other crewmembers. She was a true believer in the rebel cause and inspired hope in the rest of the crew. She was also the only other crew member aware of Kanan's test after Ezra stole the latter's holocron. Hera was in love with Kanan and usually confided in him. She was more than capable of putting her foot down when she saw conflict within the crew, such as sending Ezra and Zeb out on an errand together when the two had been fighting. While an adept fighter Hera was also very diplomatic and knew how to unite her crew to reach a common goal.
A smart, tactful and highly observant individual, Hera could quickly detect a threat. As Lando successfully played her crew members off one another to his own ends, Hera caught on to his trickery and put the con-man in his place. Her skills of deduction proved invaluable when her suspicions of Trayvis allowed her to expose the man as an Imperial agent. She also remembered when the Jedi and clones fought in the Clone Wars, at one point being saved from death by them, and encouraged Kanan to trust Rex and put aside his past animosity towards clones. Hera is also highly perceptive, often sensing things that even Kanan's perceptions couldn't.
As with other Twi'lek females, many considered her attractive, particularly Kanan but also less savory characters as well, including Okadiah Garson, Azmorigan, Lando, and even Kallus. She knew how to use her natural charm and beauty to her advantage when necessary, as seen when she manipulated the gangster Azmorigan in order to escape his ship.
Weapons and Gear
Hera mainly used a Blurrg-1120 holdout blaster when fighting the Empire, which she kept in a holster strapped to her right boot.
She mainly wore a tight orange jumpsuit and a pair of flight goggles on the top of her head as she was the Rebels' pilot.
- She is voiced by Vanessa Marshall.
- Hera was the daughter of Cham Syndulla, who was first introduced in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
- By the time of the series, Hera was 24 years old.
- In season 3, Hera underwent a minor redesign. Her undersuit is now two shades of tan and has more detailed texturing.
- As of "Wings of the Master", Hera becomes Phoenix Leader.
- Hera's natural Twi'lek accent comes out when she gets flustered, as shown in "Homecoming".
- When Hera is particularly angry, she'll act like a mother and use a character's full name.
- She was referenced in the Rogue One film, in a scene at Yavin 4 where a General Syndulla is called for over the speaker system, which Dave Filoni has clarified was meant to be Hera (not her father, Cham). He also stated that Hera, by this point, has become a General in the Rebel Alliance.
- Hera was later revealed to be playing a role in Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures, which is set between The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi; though the series is non-canon, it was confirmed that this reflects Hera surviving through to that time period.
