Premise[]

Low on fuel and power in deep space, the Ghost crew encounters massive, mysterious creatures whose lives are threatened by a mining operation.

Synopsis[]

The Rebellion was suffering a fuel crisis, and the Ghost Crew had been sent on a mission to an asteroid belt where a Mining Guild station existed. According to the Rebellion’s Intel, the mining operations refine fuel meant for the Empire, enough shipment to fuel the Rebel fleet for a full cycle. The Empire was scheduled to pick their current shipment, and it was Rebel's mission to get to it before they did. Running on fumes, the Rebels arrived at the Asteroid belt of where the refinery was, but due to the asteroid field scrambling their sensors finding the facility would not be easy. In order to keep the Ghost moving, the Rebels were forced to reserve all power to the engines, leaving them with limited fire-power and little heating. Already the Rebels were feeling the cold of space. As they neared the field, Ezra began to hear strange sirens that he described sounded sad. Nobody else could hear anything but Ezra did. Then straight ahead they spotted a group of space animals, known as purrgil, coming towards them.

Rebels The Call 01

The Ghost Crew's encounter with the purrgil.

While Ezra was amazed by these creatures, Hera showed caution. The purrgil passed the Ghost, and a few of them collided with the ship. Hera was prepared to open fire in order to draw them away, but Kanan objected as they could not waste their fire-power. He advised to let the purrgil pass, but Hera remained insistent. Ezra suggested flying with them instead of against them, that way they would not get bashed around so much or need to waste their power reserves. The Rebels agreed it was a good idea, including Hera who reluctantly turned the ship about and flew alongside the purrgil. The purrgil themselves began to calm down and started to fly along with the Ghost. Ezra spotted one of them coming up alongside, and noticed that it was looking at him.

As Hera went on saying how menacing they were, Ezra tried to connect with the nearby purrgil through The Force. Through his connection, he sensed that they were upset about something, and he was proven right as Kanan spotted two non-Imperial TIE Fighters closing in. The TIEs opened fire on Ghost, and the Rebels fired back. But with their power supplies dangerously low, their fire-power was limited. Despite running on fumes, the Rebels still managed to take out both fighters. The Rebels suspected those fighters were from the refinery, and knowing if they could track where they originated from they might find the refinery. Meanwhile, the Purrgills changed direction, flying away from the Ghost. Ezra began to notice something that he could not figure out. He said they should follow them, but Hera objected. Sabine managed to pinpoint where the fighters originated from, and to both her and Hera’s surprise it was where the purrgil were heading.

Following the purrgil further into the asteroid field, Hera instructed everyone to inspect their cabins and make sure everything was switched off, as they still needed to reserve whatever fuel they had left. Already the automatic doors ceased to function. While everyone else carried out Hera’s orders, Ezra spoke to her about the purrgil. He never knew there were creatures in deep space. Hera remembered stories about creatures that traveled between worlds, and it was rumoured to believe that it was the purrgil who inspired pilots to jump from system to system. However, Hera did not believe that; she only saw the purrgil as a threat towards ships, as they were known to wonder in hyperspace lanes and destroy ships. Hera lost a few friends that way. Ezra on the other hand believed they were just following their nature, and yet did not realize they are putting people in danger.

Rebels The Call 02

Approaching the refinery.

The Rebels soon had the mining guild station in sight, based in a planetoid crater flowing with a pool of gas. They took a secure position to plan their attack, and landed the Ghost on a small asteroid close to the refinery. Observing their plan, they discovered the mining guild base had available fighters, anti-ship cannons, and a few guards on patrol. The Empire’s shipment was also present waiting for pick up. The Rebels could simply drop down and scoop up, but since their fuel level was critical, they would have to land and refuel unless they had a chance of getting out. Zeb knew the patrol guards would attack once they caught site of them, and suggested in coming up with a diversion. Sabine suggested using the gas in the pool, as it was known to be highly explosive and could give them the diversion they needed to grab the fuel and get out. The explosion would also destroy the refinery in the process. While everyone else was in agreement with the plan, Ezra again noticed something about purrgil. He saw them diving in and out of the gas pool as if they were feeding on it. This gave him reason to believe that there was a connection between the purrgil and the gas.

Since they were in the upper atmosphere of the planet and could not use the Phantom to fly in, Kanan, Ezra, Sabine, and Chopper jumped directly from the Ghost and skydived towards the refinery. All four of them made it down safely, but raised the alarm. Sabine was about to use the explosives to set off the gas, but Ezra stopped her. After taking out their attackers, Ezra explained to Kanan and Sabine that the purrgil and the gas were somewhat connected and they could not blow up the gas without harming the purrgil. Kanan trusted Ezra’s instincts, and ordered him to man the cannon while Sabine, Chopper and himself secured the landing zone. The rest of security became aware of the Rebel’s presence and proceeded to defend the shipment.

They opened fire on Kanan, Sabine, and Chopper, and Ezra used the cannon to give them cover fire, but had to avoid hitting the fuel shipment. The landing zone was temporally secured and the Ghost came in to land. While the Rebels gathered up the shipment and refueled the Ghost, Ezra was once again distracted by the purrgil. But he was soon brought back to focusing on the mission as he needed to give his fellow Rebels more cover fire. However, another manned cannon returned fire and knocked Ezra off the platform. He fell into the gas pool, only to be saved by landing on the back of a purrgil. Ezra also lost his helmet in the process. He tried to reach for it as he struggled to breath in the gas, but it fell off. Suffocating, Ezra looked into eyes of the Purrgill he was riding, begging for help. Looking into the creatures eyes, he began to see and finally understand. The purrgil wanted the help of the Rebels. Another purrgil came alongside and presented Ezra with his lost helmet, saving his life.

Rebels Season Two - Mid-Season 55

Ezra with reinforcements.

Meanwhile, the Rebels were still loading the shipment aboard the Ghost, and still refuelling. With time running out, they became pinned down with guards everywhere and two fighters blocking their escape. Then suddenly, the Ezra and the purrgil emerged from the gas pool and attacked the refinery and its patrols, buying the Rebels more time. The Ghost was finally loaded and refueled, and at full power the ship tool off from the refinery and assisted in the purrgil attack. Together they defeated their attackers and destroyed the refinery.

Victorious, the Rebels and the purrgil retreated to open space, and Ezra re-joined with the ship. Ezra found his experience with the purrgil unbelievable. He actually saw what they were thinking, which made Kanan believe he established a deep connection with them through the force. Through his connection, Ezra saw they needed the gas to breathe and travel, and the crater was not exactly there home but a stop on a long journey. Hera too was grateful for the support they got from the purrgil, and the Rebels looked on as the purrgil themselves jumped to hyperspace, proving that they were the inspiration for pilots to jump from system to system.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first episode in which the Empire does not appear.
  • This is the eighth episode in which the Stormtroopers do not appear.
  • Yushyn's design is based on a rough sketch for bounty hunter Ralph McQuarrie illustrated for The Empire Strikes Back.
  • The Ghost crew's masks don't require air tanks because the asteroid has a breathable atmosphere, but the Clouzon-36 needs to be filtered out. Pablo Hidalgo confirmed this in the following Rebels Recon episode. He also clarified that when Kanan and Ezra are last seen on top of the ship, they aren't actually in open space yet but still in the diffuse upper atmosphere, explaining why they aren't wearing fully sealed space suits.
  • Kanan's modified Stormtrooper helmet has a stylized Loth-cat face on it.
  • The correct plural for Purrgil is "Purgill".
  • The lead Purrgil was referred to as the "Purrgil King".
