Bo-Katan Kryze was a female Mandalorian who was a member of the splinter cell Death Watch during the Clone Wars. She served under Pre Vizsla of House Vizsla until his death at the hand of fallen Sith Lord Darth Maul, who then inherited control of the group. However, Bo-Katan refused to join him and resisted Maul's reign of Mandalore with the support of her own squad, the Nite Owls. Despite her allegiances, it was subsequently determined that she was the sister of the pacifistic Mandalorian Duchess Satine Kryze.
After the Siege of Mandalore, Bo-Katan was made regent of Mandalore by the Republic. But once the Republic became the Empire, Bo-Katan refused to submit to the rule of the Emperor, and was subsequently betrayed by Clan Saxon. Despite this, she is seen by certain Mandalorians as the true and rightful ruler of Mandalore, but her past and her failures had taken a toll on Bo-Katan.
Years after the rise of the Empire, she was contacted by Ursa Wren, asking Bo-Katan to help her daughter, Sabine Wren, who was walking into a trap on a mission to free her father, Alrich Wren. Bo-Katan and two of her loyalists saved Sabine and her friends from the trap, and out of respect, Sabine offered to Bo-Katan the Darksaber, believing she was the true and rightful ruler of Mandalore. Bo-Katan however refused, citing she was not her sister, and that she'd had her chance to rule but had failed.
She aided Sabine and the Rebels to liberate Sabine's father, who was being transported to Sundari for a public termination. But then they were contacted by Ursa and Tristan Wren, who had encountered a new Arc Pulse Generator weapon which incinerated their clanmembers.
They made it in time to find Ursa and Tristan the lone survivors of the attack and were forced to flee from some TIE fighters, which Bo-Katan and Ezra Bridger destroyed.
Aboard her ship, Bo-Katan confronted Sabine about the weapon and Sabine shamefully confessed to have created it back in her imperial academy days, but once she realized what the Empire planned to do with it, she'd sabotaged the prototype and deleted all records of it before she left, and thought that had been the end of it. They began to plan a mission to destroy the weapon before it was completed to its full deadly potential.
After the mission to destroy Sabine's weapon was successful, Sabine again offered the Darksaber to Bo-Katan, stating the veteran had the wisdom and guidance of a true leader, and believed she (Sabine) had found the Darksaber because she was meant to pass it on to Bo-Katan. After several clans, including Wren, swore loyalty to Clan Kryze, Bo-Katan accepted the Darksaber and became the true and rightful leader of Mandalore.
