The Galactic Empire made these available to their workers to improve their performance, at the cost of their personality. Rodian worker Tseebo volunteered to use one of them to access Imperial data and learn the fate of Ephraim Bridger and his wife; he inadvertently downloaded a massive Imperial database, which he later turned over to the Rebellion.
The Controller was also fitted with one of these units, which appeared to make him a dangerously effective agent of the Imperial Information Office, enabling him to accomplish such tasks as reprogramming C1-10P. It is unknown what effect it had on his personality; the device was later overloaded by the same power surge that destroyed the Controller's Imperial Light Cruiser.
- The first appearance of this technology in the franchise was in The Empire Strikes Back, in which Lando Calrissian's assistant Lobot is equipped with the device.
